What is an SR22?
An SR-22 is a certificate of insurance that proves you carry car insurance. Some people refer to it as SR 22 car insurance, or a Certificate of Financial Responsibility (CFR) filing. The SR22 simply states you’re meeting your state’s car insurance coverage requirements for driving over a specified amount of time.
SR22, SR-22, SR 22, SR22 form: Is it all the same?
Yes, no matter how you spell SR22, all of the above examples refer to SR-22 car insurance for drivers.
Do I need an SR22?
You may need SR 22 coverage if you have one of the following driving violations (your state might also require them for reasons not listed):
DUI or DWI
Driving without insurance coverage
Driving with a suspended license
Is an SR-22 considered car insurance?
An SR 22 means you are meeting your state’s car insurance minimum requirements for driving and is NOT car insurance itself. We, as your policy provider, make the “promise” to the state that we’re covering your driving for certain car insurance-related circumstances.
What does a SR-22 cost?
At Dairyland®, we file your SR22 for free. Some other companies and agencies might charge you additional fees.
What do I need to do to get SR-22 insurance?
The additional information can vary a little by state, but in general, simply indicating you’re a driver in need of an SR 22 filing when purchasing your policy is enough.
Can I get an SR22 today?
Yes, we can issue you one immediately. In most states, we are able to electronically send your SR-22 to the state the same day.
How long does an SR 22 last?
Most states require drivers to have SR22 coverage along with an insurance policy for about three years. This may vary by state or by circumstances, so be sure to check your state’s requirements.
What if my policy cancels?
If your SR-22 lapses, your insurance company is required to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This could result in loss of your driver’s license or, depending on your state of residence, other consequences. Making payments on time will help prevent an SR26 from being sent to the state. An SR26 cancels the SR22.
Will an SR22 raise my insurance?
With many companies, yes—but not Dairyland®. Generally, just having an SR-22 filing on your policy will not impact your car insurance premium at Dairyland.
What types of SR 22 certificates are there?
There are three types of SR22 insurance:
Operator: An Operator’s Certificate is designed for drivers who borrow or rent a car, but don’t own a car. This is sometimes used with a non-owner car insurance policy.
Owner: An Owner’s Form is for those who own and drive their own car.
Operator/Owner: An Operator/Owner Form is a combination form that applies to those who own their own car, but also borrow or rent one to drive occasionally.
Can I get a SR-22 if I don’t own a car?
Yes. You can get SR22 insurance if you don’t own a vehicle with our non-owner car insurance policy.
Does my state require an SR 22?
Each state has its own SR-22 coverage requirements for drivers, which are subject to change. If you’re not sure of these requirements, we recommend you contact your state’s Department of Insurance.
SR22 vs. FR44: What’s the difference?
In Florida and Virginia, in some cases an FR 44 may be required instead of an SR-22, based on your driving record. Similar to an SR 22, the FR-44 is a document of financial responsibility proving that you carry car insurance. However, an FR 44 may require your liability coverage limits to be significantly higher than the state minimum.
What’s a Certificate of Financial Responsibility (CFR)?
A certificate of financial responsibility is another term for SR22 insurance, showing that you’re meeting your state’s minimum car insurance requirements for a specified amount of time.
Question: What is SR22 Insurance?
Are you working on getting your driver’s license back? It is very probable you keep coming across the term SR22 filing when looking through the steps required to get licensed. SR22 is a state filing required of drivers who have gotten into some trouble along the way. Knowing what SR22 insurance is and how to get it is the beginning of getting your driving privileges reinstated.
SR22 insurance is when your insurance carrier files paperwork with the state notifying them of your coverage. The insurance company will also keep the state update on your car insurance policy renewals and cancellations. The state usually requires this filing for a few years to verify you are keeping your insurance in good standing at all times.
Who needs SR22 insurance?
The state requires SR22 filings when you have not followed the rules of the road. Several different types of violations can force you into SR22 filings. If you never break the traffic laws, you will never have to worry about SR22 insurance. The following violations can add up to forced SR22 insurance if you want to continue to be a licensed driver.
Driving Under the Influence
Multiple traffic violations within a few years
Getting into a car accident without having car insurance
Where can you get SR22 insurance?
Most insurance agencies are capable of selling SR22 insurance.
However, some prefer not to and could turn you away or just not respond to your requests. You are better off looking into insurance agencies which specialize in high risk car insurance companies. An insurance agent who handles the filings on a day to day basis is more likely to have more options for you and get the job done efficiently.
How do you get SR22 insurance?
Purchasing a car insurance policy with an SR22 filing should not be complicated. You tell the insurance agent or make the selection online if you are buying direct. The insurance carrier should take care of the rest. Dealing directly with an agent you should be able to get an accurate price a little faster. Meanwhile, purchasing car insurance online can delay an accurate rating because the SR22 fees vary per state. You may not find out exactly what the fee is until after the policy is purchased.
How much does SR22 insurance cost?
Purchasing a car insurance policy with an SR22 filing can be very expensive. The high cost is more likely due to your violation than the actual state filing fee. A DUI, multiple traffic violations, or an accident with current insurance all lead to high risk insurance rates. Add in an additional fee such as an SR22 filing and you are certainly paying more than an average driver. State filing fees vary per state. Expect to pay at least $25 on top of cost of your insurance coverage. Normally you only pay the fee at the time you setup your policy. Switching insurance carriers or lapsing in coverage will require another processing fee.
To reduce the overall cost of high risk insurance, it is recommended high risk drivers insure a used vehicle which does not require physical damage coverage. Keeping your car insurance coverage to a minimal amount will save you lots of money up until you get out of the high risk tier. It is not uncommon for someone with a recent DUI or multiple traffic violations to sell their car and downgrade in order to make driving somewhat affordable. Get through the rough patch and begin again once the violations have dropped off your driving record.
