    Car insurance provides financial protection in the event of an incident which causes damage to your vehicle. Depending on the level of insurance, it may cover the cost if your car is vandalised or stolen.
    Many factors are considered when you apply for insurance, including the make and model of your car, your age, where you keep it and whether you have any motoring convictions.
    Why do I need car insurance?
    Car insurance is required by law, unless you have registered your vehicle as being off the road.
    The minimum level of insurance is third party only, which provides cover if you injure other drivers, passengers or pedestrians, or cause damage to someone else’s property. Comprehensive cover provides further financial protection in case your car is damaged or stolen.
    What types of car insurance are available?
    You have three types of car insurance to choose from – third party, third party, fire and theft, and comprehensive.
    Third party is the minimum cover required by law. It provides cover for injury to others or damage caused to their vehicle or property, but does not provide cover for damage to your vehicle.
    Third party, fire and theft provides the same cover as third party, while also providing cover in the event of your car being stolen or damaged by fire.
    Comprehensive is the highest level of insurance available. Cover is provided for injuries to others, theft, vandalism or accidental damage to your car.

    * A courtesy car is provided with comprehensive cover while your car is repaired at an approved garage. When you buy comprehensive cover direct from the AA, you also get a courtesy car for up to 21 days if your car is written off or stolen and not recovered. To qualify, you must be over 18 (over 23 in Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man) and have a full UK driving licence. This additional cover isn’t available through price comparison and cashback websites.
