    Lawyer at law

Lawyer Directory is an online tool that helps connect people with lawyers across the province. The Law Society of Alberta has upgraded Lawyer Directory so that Albertans have access to more information when choosing a lawyer who meets their individual needs.
We’ve improved the functionality of Lawyer Directory by making it possible to search for a lawyer by name, firm, location, area(s) of practice, language(s) spoken, gender, and whether a lawyer offers limited scope retainers.
Discipline information dating back to January 1, 2015, where applicable, is also shown on profiles in Lawyer Directory. We will continue to publish discipline information going forward as per Rule 40.1. Discipline information prior to January 1, 2015 remains available on our website. Access to discipline information offers online access to the Law Society Roll (see Rule 39), which aligns with the National Discipline Standards as set by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.
If you are a lawyer and would like to update which personal details (areas of practice, languages spoken, gender, limited scope retainers) display on Lawyer Directory, please update your settings in the Lawyer Portal.
The Lawyer Referral service might help you find a lawyer when you need one. The service provides you with the contact information of up to three lawyers who will review what legal services might help you. The service has no connection with Legal Aid Alberta nor does it provide any form of financially subsidized legal service you might find through charitable organizations like Pro Bono Law Alberta.
As the regulator of Alberta lawyers, the Law Society must remain objective and does not provide referrals based on credentials or experience. Alberta lawyers have the option to sign up for the service and referrals are made based on the area(s) of law they indicate they are practising.
Before contacting Lawyer Referral, we recommend you first check out Dial-A-Law. Dial-A-Law is a free service operated by Calgary Legal Guidance that provides general information on a wide variety of legal issues relating to Alberta law. If, after listening to that information, you still think you need a lawyer, contact Lawyer Referral for help in locating the right one for you.
The Lawyer Referral operator will answer your call. Once you describe the nature of your problem, the operator will give you the names and telephone numbers of up to three lawyers practicing in the area of law that best suit your needs. You can then make appointments to talk to one, two, or all three of the lawyers; please be sure to mention you got their contact information from Lawyer Referral.
When you talk to each lawyer, the first half-hour of the conversation is free and is the time to discuss your legal situation and explore your options. You should not expect the lawyer to do any free work during this time — that is not the purpose of Lawyer Referral. However, you could certainly ask what it might cost to have your legal work done and other questions to determine if the lawyer may be a good fit for you.
