Cheap auto insurance

Who Has the Best Cheap Car Insurance?

If you own a car, car insurance is a required expense in 48 of the 50 states. A lack of diligence when shopping for your car insurance could lead to a hefty monthly bill, as well as headaches if you actually need to file a claim. We researched and explored quotes from over 128 companies in 2,700 cities to determine which insurers had the lowest costs, nationally and in each state. Our team also evaluated which companies had the best track record for customer service and the claims process.

What is the Cheapest Car Insurance Company?

After our analysis of 2,700 cities and 128 companies, we found that Erie was the most affordable major insurer in the country with an average yearly rate of $1,052 based on our sample driver — about 31% cheaper than the national average across every insurer. The very largest of the five is GEICO, the second largest auto insurer in the U.S. by market share.

The Cheapest Insurers By State

The price of car insurance can vary greatly between states. One company may be expensive in Utah, but inexpensive in New York. In some states, a small, local company could even offer the best price. Below, click through to your state to see which company and cities have the least expensive car insurance based on the numerous studies we’ve conducted.

What Is The Best Car Insurance Company?

We identified the auto insurance companies with the cheapest rates, but, as with anything, you want to be sure you are getting high quality service from your insurance company. Reliable car insurance companies are critical in ensuring a smooth customer-insurer relationship. There are a few factors we deemed most important to evaluate a company on which affect policy holders’ satisfaction, such as, the average shopping experience, customer service, ability to resolve complaints, and quote filing process.

The Best Car Insurance Companies

  • Erie: Best Overall Company
  • State Farm: Best Large Company
  • Progressive: Best Company After Getting into an Accident
  • USAA: Best Company for Military Families
  • Metromile: Best Company for Low Mileage Drivers
  • The Hartford: Best Company for Handling Claims
  • Liberty Mutual: Best For the Shopping Experience

Best Overall Car Insurance Company: Erie

Erie is the cheapest insurance company, and arguably the most reliable insurance company as well. They score points by allowing customers to start their quote online, which we personally found to be a streamlined and fast process. Erie also scored the highest marks from the number of policies they offer. Erie offers pet coverage, free accident forgiveness, free vanishing deductibles, roadside assistance, and many more, essentially giving its customers a degree of flexibility not even found amongst the largest insurers. Customers of Erie may also be eligible for its Rate Lock program. This is a unique program where customers won’t see their rates increase except for three reasons: you move to a different area, add or remove someone from your policy, or add or subtract a car. Lastly, despite its smaller size, Erie offers the same types of discounts larger national insurers provide such as bundling, anti-lock brakes, anti-theft, young driver and senior driver among others.

The biggest downside to Erie is that it is only available in Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. As well, Erie still relies strongly on its agent network; which isn’t always a bad thing. A strong agent network is usually key to ensuring a smooth claims process. If you want to quickly buy car insurance without speaking to anyone though, Erie may not be the company for you. While you can start the process online, you ultimately will have to speak with an agent to finalize your quote. Erie will be ideal for any customers within its market, who do not mind putting in some extra effort to get quality and cheap auto insurance.

Best Large Car Insurance Company: State Farm

Of the biggest auto insurers in the U.S. — State Farm, GEICO, Allstate, Progressive and Farmers — State Farm ranks as the greatest overall. State Farm was rated 4/5 stars by customers and policyholders in a JD Power survey on companies shopping experience. State Farm is best known for its large agent network; they boast over 18,000 across the nation. It shouldn’t be surprising then that State Farm gets 5/5 stars for how its agents interact with customers. As well, State Farm is great when it comes to offering discounts. If you go with State Farm you will have up to 15 discounts to be eligible for which can equal hundreds of dollars worth of savings.

While State Farm’s shopping experience is well-reviewed, customers did not feel as strongly about it’s claims handling process. The company scored about the same as the other four large companies, but was still mediocre. A large national company may be expected to not be very efficient because of the various departments involved in handling individual claims. If you want the assurances guaranteed to you by a large, «legacy» carrier, then State Farm is the best to go with.

Best Auto Insurance Company after an Accident: Progressive

We found Progressive was the most affordable car insurance rates after a recent accident compared to the many auto insurance companies we surveyed. From the $1,241 average we state above, rates increased by 29% after an at-fault accident. While that may still seem high, it was the smallest rate increase we saw of any company including Erie, State Farm, GEICO and American Family.

Other pros of Progressive include it being an online company. You can get a quote directly from the Progressive website without having to speak to an agent. Cons of Progressive involve its customer service. Customers in the J.D. Power survey only gave mediocre remarks for Progressive for its buying experience and claims handling process. It isn’t the worst, but Progressive is far from the best in the field. Because of this, Progressive might be the best insurer ideally for customers prioritizing low rates, especially after an accident, and do not mind a bit more cumbersome claims handling process.

Best Car Insurance Company for Military Members: USAA

If you are or were in the military, or if your parents, parent-in-law, or spouse was in the military you are eligible for USAA auto insurance, and they may just be the best company for you. USAA scores 5/5 stars for the both shopping experience, and claims handling process in the J.D. Power study. They do particularly well on how you can report your claims to the company. You should also be highly satisfied with their final settlement claims. For more information, read here.

Best Car Insurance for Low-Mileage Drivers: Metromile

If you find yourself away from the wheel more times than not, a pay-per mile auto insurance company like Metromile may be the best company to go with. Metromile is one of the first companies in the U.S. where a bulk of a driver’s premium is determined by how much they drive. How much is too much? We found that generally for Metromile to be a good deal, drivers should only drive 7,500 miles or less per year. The biggest downsides to Metromile is a mediocre record of claims handling, in addition to the company only being available in seven states: CA, IL, NJ, OR, PA, VA, WA.

Best Auto Insurance for Handling Claims: The Hartford

Also known as AARP, The Hartford was the recipient of the 2016 J.D. Power study for car insurance companies ability to handle claims. The Hartford scored 5/5 stars for nearly every step of the claims process; from notifying them, to the repair process, and the final settlement. Those who think a smooth claims process is the most important factor for car insurance, The Hartford should definitely be considered.

Best Company for the Shopping Experience: Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual actually tied Erie insurance for this category, but since we already called Erie the best overall company, we’ll describe how Liberty Mutual is well known for a strong shopping experience. Customers of Liberty Mutual report in the study they were particularly satisfied with the flexibility of policies offered by Liberty Mutual, as well as their relationship with Liberty Mutual agents. If Erie is not located in your state, Liberty Mutual can be a good alternative if you can get a competitive rate.

The Best Car Insurance Coverage for You

To determine how much auto insurance is best for you comes down to understanding your current economic circumstances and how the different types of coverage work together. If you own a car, buying car insurance is inevitable, so it is really important you are getting the right amount for the right price. The following table gives a quick summary of what types of insurance you should have.

As to how much coverage you should have will depend on your economic situation. High net worth individuals should get high liability limits, as in those well above the minimum mandated by the state. In fact, they should have limits that equal their net worth. To read more in-depth about how much coverage you need, you should read on here.

Methodology: How We Got Our Info

We collected quotes from a variety of insurance companies across 2,700 towns and cities in the U.S, for 128 insurance companies. Our sample driver was a 30 year old male who drove a 2011 Toyota Camry. To obtain quotes, we kept parameters for getting coverage the same, such as that he was single, and had a clean driving record. The only parameter that changed was the zip code where he lived in the U.S. The amount of coverage we opted for gave our driver bit more than what is required of state minimums.

Texas car insurance coverages

Texas auto insurance coverage requirements can be different from other states. Your policy must meet the following minimum limits of liability:

Bodily Injury

  • $30,000 for the death or injury of any one person, any one accident
  • $60,000 for all persons in any one accident

Property Damage

  • $25,000 for any one accident

This basic coverage is often referred to as 30/60/25 coverage and is required by all drivers in Texas. However, with car insurance, the more coverage you have, the less it will cost you out of pocket if you get in an accident.

Fee schedule FAQs

What if my payment is attempted and it fails?

Unfortunately, since we may incur fees for declined payments, Elephant charges a $35.00 Insufficient Funds Fee (NSF Fee) whenever an automatic payment attempt is declined.

A $10.00 late fee may also be charged if payment is not received by the close of business the day after your due date.

What if I know that I will not have enough money in my account?

Customers may contact Elephant at 1-855-ELEPHANT and request that their payment not be attempted. However, to cover bank costs, Elephant may charge certain administrative fees, including:

  • A $35.00 Insufficient Funds Fee
  • A $10.00 late fee (charged two (2) days after your due date)

To make sure that every request can be entered correctly into our billing system, we ask that customers call in at least 3 days before their due date. Any request made less than three days prior to your due date will be entered into our queue, but we cannot guarantee that your balance due will not be attempted.

Once your due date has passed, you will receive a notice in the mail explaining the full past-due balance, and will need to call payment into our office or mail in a check to keep your policy active.

If I make partial payments before my due date, will I be charged multiple installment fees?

No, installment fees are charged on a per installment basis. So, if you have ten (10) installments to pay over the course of your twelve (12) month policy, you will be assessed ten (10) installment fees.

The actual amount of the fee will vary based upon your pay plan.

See the Fee Schedule Chart below.

When is my installment fee applied to my account?

Installment fees are applied on a monthly basis, either when your account is billed, or when you make your monthly payment.

What is an “NSF” Fee? When could it be applied to my account?

An NSF Fee is an “Insufficient Funds” Fee. This fee is only applied if the payment method you have on file is declined by your bank or credit card company for insufficient funds. When this happens, a fee of $35.00 is immediately applied to the account.

When can a late fee be applied to my account?

Late fees are only applied if a customer misses their payment due date – they apply to all policies with the exception of the “Paid in Full” option.

All late fees are applied two (2) days after the payment due date. So, if you make your payment the day after your due date, there will be no late fee! If not, a $10.00 fee will be applied to your account.

What is a reinstatement fee?

This is a $10.00 fee that is applied to your account for a reinstatement related to non-pay cancellations. For example, if you miss your payment due date, and cannot pay before the cancellation date on your non-pay cancellation notice, a $10.00 fee will be applied to your account if and only if you decide to reinstate your policy. Elephant will never charge you a reinstatement fee if your policy has been canceled in error.

What is an SR-22 fee?

This fee is when submission of an SR-22 is requested by the policyholder. According to the Safety Responsibility or Evidence of Financial Responsibility law, persons whose driving privilege has been suspended or revoked for an accident, conviction, or judgment are required to file and maintain a Form SR-22 with the Department of Public Safety. If you feel that you may be required to file an SR-22, contact the Department of Public Safety for further clarification.

Best Car Insurance Companies in California

For Californians, the cheapest car insurance company may not be the best. Certain companies are better for certain types of drivers, so we discuss some insurance companies that may be better for you—depending on your circumstances.

As we mention above, Nationwide was the best company in California for cheap car insurance. The large auto insurer even bested typically cheap insurers like GEICO and Progressive. In most cities that we surveyed in the Golden State, Nationwide was the go-to company for low cost rates. In terms of the company’s customer satisfaction however, Nationwide is only mediocre according to the 2016 J.D. Power auto insurance study of California. Nationwide scored mostly 3/5 stars in most categories including interaction with agents, and their method of billing. They did score 4/5 stars however when it came to the claims handling process

Ameriprise was the winner of the 2016 J.D. Power study, scoring a 5/5 stars overall. They got top marks in their billing practices and in the flexibility of policies they offer to customers. They had slightly lower marks in their claims handling process (4/5) as well as their agents’ interaction with customers. We could not get pricing for Ameriprise but the company is generally known for offering affordable and competitive rates.

Metromile is a newcomer to auto insurance in California. The small car insurer bases its rates largely on how often its customers driver by charging them a rate per mile. The rate is usually in between $0.10 and $0.20. In addition to the rate they also charge a base premium. We found people who drive less than 7,500 miles a year would benefit the most from Metromile. Anything above 7,500 miles begins to cost just as much as regular insurance. The downside to Metromile is that they do not have a great record of customer satisfaction and claims handling. This likely stems from the company being mostly online and not having an agent network.

If you are or were in the military, or if your spouse or parents were, you are eligible for USAA car insurance. USAA scores five out five stars across the board for customer satisfaction in California. Customers of the military company are apparently very satisfied with how they handle claims, interact with customers and the number of policies they offer.

The Best Rated Auto Insurers in California

Using complaint and exposure data from the California Department of Insurance, we calculated the justified complaint ratio for auto insurance companies in California. We’ve listed them from the best (lowest complaint index) to the worst (highest complaint index). If a company has an index of 1.05, then that means it has a 5% higher share of complaints compared to its share of underwriting exposure.

Average Cost of Car Insurance in California

How much do people pay on average for car insurance in California? Based on our data, that figure is $1,665. This takes into account sample rates multiple companies in 142 cities throughout the state.

Auto Insurance in California: Minimum Coverage Requirements

California requires that car insurance policies have at least bodily injury liability and property damage liability coverages of the limits below:

  • Bodily Injury (BI): $15,000 per person / $30,000 per accident
  • Property Damage (PD): $5,000 per accident

While the above is the lowest amount of insurance coverage you can have, you should consider adding more if you have more to lose. For example, we typically advise drivers to match their liability coverage to what they have in total assets. If you own a house in one of the most expensive zip codes in California, Atherton, and have sizable savings and investment accounts, we’d recommend you increase your liability limits and consider adding umbrella coverage on top. On the other hand, if you’re a first-year student at UCLA, you may be fine with liability limits that are closer to the minimums.

How We Conducted This Study

We collected quotes from a variety of insurance companies across 142 towns and cities in California. Our sample driver was a 30 year old male who drove a Toyota Camry. To obtain quotes, we kept parameters for getting coverage the same, such as that he was single, had a good credit score and a clean driving record. The only parameter that changed was the zip code where he lived in California. The amount of coverage we opted for gave our driver bit more than what is required of state minimums.

Cheap Car Insurance Ohio — Get a Free Quote Online

As a leader in Ohio auto insurance, Acceptance understands that value and service are the cornerstones of a great insurance policy. Our mission is to provide a wide range of auto insurance products, so every customer can tailor their policy to meet their unique needs, including these core coverage types:

State Requirements

  • Drivers in Ohio must have a minimum of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in bodily injury liability coverage, and $25,000 per accident in property damage liability coverage.

Basic Liability Coverage

This is the minimum level of Ohio auto insurance that drivers must have before they can legally get behind the wheel in this state. If you are at fault for a collision with another vehicle, your basic liability coverage will pay for the driver’s medical bills, any passengers’ medical bills and damage to the vehicle or any other property within. Many drivers also opt for additional coverage, as the minimum required amount is often insufficient to cover expensive repairs and ongoing medical bills resulting from a collision.

Comprehensive and Collision Coverage

Comprehensive/collision coverage takes care of many accident-related costs that a basic liability policy won’t cover. Collision coverage will cover the damage to your vehicle and other property following an accident, while comprehensive coverage will take care of other sources of damage, such as fire, theft, vandalism and rocks or other debris hitting the windshield. As part of our effort to provide choice and freedom to our customers, Acceptance offers a wide range of comprehensive and collision coverage options with different monthly payments depending on the deductible amount you choose and other factors.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Unfortunately, there are many drivers in Ohio without insurance, or with only a minimal amount of insurance that may not cover the cost of medical bills and property damage if they are to cause a collision with your vehicle. It’s a rather scary thought. Acceptance offers uninsured motorist coverage to give you the peace of mind you’ve been looking for.

State minimum insurance requirements in Connecticut

In Connecticut, the state minimum coverage requirements are as follows:
Liability
  • Bodily Injury $25,000 per person
  • Bodily Injury $50,000 per accident
  • Property Damage $25,000 per accident
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist
  • Bodily Injury $25,000 per person
  • Bodily Injury $50,000 per accident
Optional coverage in Connecticut (varies by carrier):
  • Comprehensive
  • Collision
  • Loan/Lease Payoff
  • Medical Payments
  • Rental Car Reimbursement
  • Roadside Assistance

Liability coverage is legally required in Connecticut and pays for injury and lost wages that you cause to another driver or their passengers as well as damage to the other driver’s vehicle in the event that you are considered “at fault” in an accident. The coverage limits are determined by each individual state and normally split into three categories. In Connecticut, the minimum is listed as 25/50/25 and explained below:

$25,000 bodily injury coverage per person. This is the maximum dollar amount that pays for a single person that you injure in an auto accident.

$50,000 bodily injury coverage per accident. This is the maximum dollar amount that pays for all injuries that you cause in an accident if more than one person is hurt.

$25,000 property damage per accident. This is the maximum dollar amount that pays for damage that you cause in an accident.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is legally required in Connecticut and pays for injury and lost wages that you or your passengers may suffer in the event that you are hit by an uninsured/underinsured driver who is at fault. The coverage limits are determined by each individual state and normally split into two categories. In Connecticut, the minimum is listed as 25/50 and explained below:

$25,000 bodily injury coverage per person. This is the maximum dollar amount that pays for a single person injured in your vehicle by an uninsured/underinsured driver.

$50,000 bodily injury coverage per accident. This is the maximum dollar amount that pays for all injuries in your vehicle by an uninsured/underinsured driver if more than one person is hurt.

These numbers reflect the minimum limits required in Connecticut but higher coverage amounts are available with most companies.

The Best Cheap Auto Insurance

  • Travlers — Best Overall
  • GEICO — Runner-Up

Price is obviously a major consideration when it comes to auto insurance, but it shouldn’t be your main concern. If your provider can’t actually help you when you’re in an accident, it won’t matter how much (or how little) you paid for your policy.

Our favorite cheap auto insurance provider is Travelers, a company that leads the pack in both coverage and discounts. Supplemental options include everything from common add-ons like rental reimbursement to rarer benefits such as GAP insurance, which covers the difference in value between a wrecked vehicle and the amount remaining on its loan. We also love that many of Travelers’ deductions are accessible to a broad swath of customers, with driver discounts for simple behaviors like paying your bill on time.

GEICO, our runner-up, comes with similar coverage and discounts to Travelers. Where the two differ is in their priorities: GEICO tends to favor vehicles’ safety features over their driver’s habits, which makes the company a strong option for owners of newer cars. Plus, GEICO’s high claims satisfaction and attention to customer service mean it won’t keep you waiting when you need support.

In order to find the lowest rate, you’ll need to get quotes from multiple insurers. We recommend looking at ProgressiveAllstate, and State Farm, three insurers that have no trouble providing the basic coverage you need, plus supplemental coverage options you want. These providers don’t perform quite as well as our top picks — overall they have fewer add-ons and lower financial strength ratings. However, they also come with a generous number of discounts, which can translate to your lowest rate if you qualify.

How We Found the Best Cheap Auto Insurance

In our earlier review of the best auto insurance, we examined nearly 20 nationwide auto insurers to find those with the strongest financial ratings and claims processing abilities that will keep you satisfied if the unexpected occurs. These companies protect you when you need it, with the resources to ensure you’re not left dealing with the aftermath of an accident alone. Here, we’ll take a closer look our top companies’ discounts.

Our mission: Find out which insurers offer the best coverage with the most opportunities to save.

Just remember that no single insurer is guaranteed to have the lowest rates for everyone. The price of your premium will vary based on factors specific to you — your age, location, car model, credit score, driving record, and more. That’s why you should compare quotes from each of our top picks.

We looked for coverage that will keep you safe.

Your insurance needs are as varied as the factors that determine your rate. That means the best policy will fit like a tailored shirt, with just the right amount of flexibility to ensure you can use it wherever, whenever. But the insurance agents and attorney we spoke to agree: There are some things that aren’t worth sacrificing. We’ve put together a list of coverage options you should always look for based on their recommendations — even if they aren’t included in standard auto policies. Opting for these will ensure you have the minimum level of protection for any accident.

Must-have coverage

  • Bodily injury liability pays the expenses stemming from injuries you might cause in an accident. Medical treatment isn’t cheap — it’s essential to protect your assets in case a doctor’s visit is added to your insurance costs.
  • Collision covers damages that may result from colliding with another car, object, or from flipping your vehicle. This coverage is particularly important since these are the accidents most likely to occur in everyday life.
  • Comprehensive protects against theft or damage that isn’t from a collision with another car or object. That means things like earthquakes, fires, vandalism, and damage caused by animals. If you’re in an area with high rates of such environmental factors, it’s important to protect yourself with comprehensive coverage — you’re likely paying more in your premium for them as is.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP) / medical payment is similar to bodily injury liability but instead covers the costs of injuries to yourself and any passengers in your vehicle. You certainly don’t want to be underinsured when it comes to your own medical attention — choosing PIP helps protect you from financial damages that might come as a result of physical ones.
  • Property damage liability pays for damage to other people’s property that you might cause in an accident. That includes other vehicles, buildings, telephone poles, fences, and any other property; chances are an accident you’re in will affect more than just your vehicle.
  • Uninsured / underinsured motorist (UM / UIM) protects you against the costs of being in an accident with uninsured or underinsured motorists, or hit and run drivers. It’s frustrating to have to pay for another motorist’s insurance negligence, but if you don’t have UM / UIM coverage, you’ll probably be forced to pay far more than just your premium.

Choosing these coverage options will keep you protected in most scenarios but they won’t pay for everything. If you’re involved in a particularly pricey accident, your standard policy will only cover expenses up to a certain amount.

That’s where supplemental coverage comes into play.

Additional protections like umbrella coverage — which pays liability costs that exceed the limits of your standard auto policy — help provide an extra layer of financial security. Others, like pet injury — which helps with veterinary expenses stemming from an accident — will only appeal to a handful of drivers. But if you have a four-legged family member that often rides in the car with you, this optional protection becomes a necessity.

Selecting the right supplemental coverage is a matter of mixing and matching providers’ plans with the things that are important to you.

No single insurer will offer coverage that’s best for everyone, but strong companies will have plenty of options to choose from.

Travelers offers the most supplemental coverage choices of our contenders, followed closely by GEICO and Allstate. This isn’t a guarantee that they’ll have everything you’re looking for, but by offering a wide range of available coverage, they provide more opportunities to protect the things that matter most to you.

Discounts are where you’ll find your savings.

Once you’ve established the coverage you want, it doesn’t hurt to pick the plan that will save you the most money. More discounts doesn’t necessarily mean more savings but it does mean more opportunities to save, so we favored those providers with a wide range of available deductions.

Surprisingly, we found some sizable differences among our top picks. Travelers and GEICO had the most discounts, edging out competitors like Progressive for overall total. Both of these insurers had around 33% more discounts than major providers like Nationwide.

Some of these depend on factors beyond your control, like your age or the safety features installed in your car, so you won’t qualify for every discount an insurer offers. Others, like a deduction for switching to paperless billing, are based on behaviors that are accessible to a broad swath of customers. We prioritized deductions like these since more drivers will be able to use them.

Savings for specific discounts will vary by provider — each insurer prioritizes factors differently. For example, both GEICO and State Farm offer discounts for insuring multiple cars under the same policy, but State Farm only offers up to 20% for its multi-car deduction; GEICO can save you up to 25%. Plus, your provider may have a limit to the total you can save through discounts. That’s why it’s critical to compare quotes, not just the deductions you qualify for.

One Good Reason to Shop With Us

«After being with my insurance company for just shy of 10 years, and after having shopped at companies that everyone around my hometown swore were the cheapest (including unadvertised «bargain» companies and giant comparison shopping brands), I decided to shop here at CheapCarInsurance and ended up saving just under $1,100 off my annual insurance bill, which is a lot more than I ever could have imagined anyone saving, especially me, an avid online shopper and extreme bargain hunter […]

This is pretty ridiculous considering the fact that: 1st, I had regularly asked my former insurance company for reviews and discounts; 2nd, I recently got a speeding ticket in a school zone (which I am a bit ashamed to say) just before I switched; and 3rd, that $1,100 savings was before I got an additional discount for bundling my home insurance on my policy (which is a lot lower now too).

Unfortunately, and surprisingly, 10 years of loyalty did not pay off for me, and was replaced by a 5 minute quote that will save me thousands down the road. In short, our family owns 3 cars, and my new rates are about half my old rates; so not bad for the little additional time it took to compare quotes and digitally sign a policy.

Obviously, not everyone will save nearly as much as I did, but it’s well worth your 5 minutes to find out, even if you end up only saving a few hundred dollars per year, potentially adding up to thousands over a couple years.»
