The General specializes in insuring drivers who are considered «high risk,» whose car insurance premiums are typically more expensive.

The General began selling insurance in 1963, under the company name Permanent General Agency. Later, the name was changed to Permanent General Assurance Corporation (PGAC), and in 2012, it was announced that Permanent General and all affiliated companies will unify under the one brand name «The General.»

In 2016, retired professional basketball player Shaquille O’Neal appeared in a commercial for the company.

American Family Insurance, also abbreviated as AmFam, is a private mutual company that focuses on property, casualty, and auto insurance, and also offers commercial insurance, life, health, and homeowners coverage as well as investment and retirement-planning products. A Fortune 500 company, its revenues were over $8.7 billion in 2016.

It should not be confused with American Family Home Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Munich Re subsidiary American Modern Insurance Group, Inc., or American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus.

American Family Insurance’s history began on October 3, 1927, when insurance salesman Herman Wittwer opened the doors of Farmers Mutual Insurance Company (not to be confused with the Farmers Insurance Group) in Madison, Wisconsin. At the time, the company’s only product was auto insurance and its target market was farmers. Wittwer believed farmers presented lower risks than city drivers because they drove less often and not at all in the winter.

Over the years, Farmers Mutual expanded its market and product line to meet the changing needs of its customers. In 1963, Farmers Mutual changed its name to American Family Mutual Insurance Company to reflect its broader customer base.

What Does Car Insurance Cover?

Your Car

If your vehicle is damaged in a car crash, auto insurance can help pay for your repairs. The General insurance partners with auto repair shops all over the nation to help you get your car back on the road as fast as possible. Your policy may even cover a rental car until your repairs are done. In most cases, all you have to pay is a small deductible. And if your car is damaged beyond repair, car insurance from The General may help you buy a new vehicle.

Yourself

The last thing you want is expensive medical bills on top of car repair costs. If you’re ever injured in a car accident, The General may help pay for your short- or long-term health care, giving you more peace of mind on today’s dangerous roadways.

Others

If multiple people drive your car, or if you have friends or family riding with you, you need extra protection. Your insurance policy from The General may help provide for your passengers’ health care needs, too. An car insurance policy from The General also helps protect you if you’re in a car accident that involves other drivers who don’t have insurance.
